Hair discrimination remains a source of racial injustice with serious economic consequences for Black people. The CROWN Act corrects these racial injustices by making hair discrimination illegal. Senator Holly J. Mitchell was first to introduce The CROWN Act (Senate Bill 188) in the state of California, the first state to sign the Bill into law. The CROWN Act is now law in the state of New York, championed by Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright and Senator Jamaal T. Bailey (New York 6209A). The bill has been introduced in the state of New Jersey by Senator Sandra Cunningham (Senate Bill 3945).
